Weekend Box Office Wrap-up: July 3, 2016

There were some surprises at the box office this Fourth of July weekend, but the number one spot remained unchanged for the third week in a row.

Finding Dory once again wins the weekend, bringing in $41.9 million. The latest from Pixar Animation Studios has demonstrated very strong legs since it began its box office run, riding Finding Nemo nostalgia and a slew of positive reviews to tremendous commercial success. At this point, there isn’t much left to say about the film’s performance. It has currently made $372.2 million domestically and is up to $538.2 million globally.

Debuting as an arguably shocking second is The Legend of Tarzan (read our review), which grossed $38.1 million in its first three days. The reboot was subject to largely negative reviews, which threatened to diminish its overall appeal heading into the weekend. However, it did sport an A-list cast that included the likes of Samuel L. Jackson, Margot Robbie, and Christoph Waltz, and the marquee names seemingly generated mass interest. In addition, it was directed by veteran Harry Potter helmsman David Yates, so there were probably some moviegoers curious to see what he could do with this material – given the popularity of his earlier works.

Thought to be dead on arrival, Tarzan has definitely gotten off on the right foot. Whether it can keep this up for the long haul remains to be seen, as there are several high-profile tentpoles that will be making their way to theaters over the course of July. The film had a very pricy production budget ($180 million), which does not include the marketing costs. It still has a long way to go before turning a profit for Warner Bros., and so far the worldwide gross is just $56.9 million. It’ll be interesting to see what kind of drop-off Tarzan has during its second weekend.

The Shallows Weekend Box Office Wrap up: July 3, 2016

Coming in eighth is Free State of Jones. The Civil War drama grossed $4.1 million in its second weekend to raise its domestic total to $15.1 million.

The Conjuring 2 is the #9 film with $3.8 million. The latest from director James Wan is now up to $95.2 million Stateside.

Capping off the top ten is Now You See Me 2. Grossing $2.9 million over the weekend, it increased its domestic total to $58.6 million.

[NOTE: These are only weekend box office estimates — based on Friday and Saturday ticket sales coupled with adjusted expectations for Sunday. Official weekend box office results will be released on Monday, July 4 — at which time we’ll update this post with any changes.]
