Ant-Man & Black Widow Concept Art for Captain America: Civil War

Captain America: Civil War blew the doors off of the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s Phase 3 when it hit theaters this Spring. Marvel Studios has spent most of the last decade building up parallel franchises with beloved heroes, then made the unprecedented moves to weave their stories together into a shared universe. They became teammates in The Avengers, but Civil War tore that all down by pitting hero against hero over a bill that would place heroes under the oversight of the United Nations. Even Spider-Man (whose film rights are on loan from Sony) made a historic appearance alongside – and against – his fellow Marvel heroes.

Civil War mostly borrows from the styles of the already established Marvel films. Captain America’s costume only deviates a few highlights from his appearance in Avengers: Age of Ultron, and Tony Stark’s Iron Man armor isn’t any more significantly altered than it normally is from film to film. But even those small deviations require forethought, and that’s where Marvel Studios’ design team comes in.

Andy Park, Visual Development Supervisor for Marvel Studios and concept artist for Captain America: Civil War, recently dropped a few images on his Twitter account of the preliminary work on characters like Hawkeye and Scarlet Witch. Now, the conceptual forms of  Black Widow and Ant-Man have joined the fray as well.

While these precursors to the live movie costumes may not have the same appeal as some of the crazy variants-that-could-have-been from other productions, it’s still interesting to see how spot-on the recreations were once Park’s design work was laid out. While Black Widow’s haircut has been more significant than her costume changes from film to film, Ant-Man’s style looks so radically different this film that it’s surprising his update came from the same mind. While the hero costume from his solo film had a very analog look, his new suit is polished and streamlined, almost to the point of looking like a different character.

Do you have a favorite iteration of Black Widow or Ant-Man? Does Civil War‘s design take the cake as the culmination of years of design work? Let us know what you think in the comments, and stay tuned to Screen Rant for updates on Marvel’s movie catalog.

Captain America: Civil War will be available as VOD on September 2, 2016, and on DVD and Blu-Ray on September 13, 2016; Doctor Strange opens in U.S. theaters on November 4, 2016, followed by Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 on May 5, 2017; Spider-Man: Homecoming – July 7, 2017; Thor: Ragnarok – November 3, 2017; Black Panther – February 16, 2018; Avengers: Infinity War Part 1 – May 4, 2018; Ant-Man and the Wasp – July 6, 2018; Captain Marvel – March 8, 2019; Avengers: Infinity War Part 2 – May 3, 2019; and as-yet untitled Marvel movies on July 12, 2019, and on May 1, July 10, and November 6 in 2020.
