Star Trek Beyond Clip & Character Videos Highlight the Crew

Later this year, the Star Trek franchise will celebrate its 50th anniversary, following the release of six TV series, six Original Series films, four Next Generation films and three new reboot films. A seventh TV series led by Bryan Fuller (Hannibal) is even in the works for 2017. And that’s not to mention a wide range of spin-offs including games, figurines, novels, toys, and comics.

So it’s safe to say that Kirk, Spock, Picard and the like are deeply ingrained in pop culture, but in many ways so are their lesser known crews. For example, the third and newest reboot film, Star Trek Beyond, which hits theaters in just a few weeks, will bring back other fan favorites such as Uhura, McCoy (Bones), Scotty, Sulu and Chekov. Fans have been clamoring to see these characters again, and soon they’ll get their wish.

But two and a half years have passed since Star Trek Into Darkness, and there’s no telling how we’ll find the crew deep into their five-year mission. For one, it seems Spock and Uhura (the trilogy’s main couple) have had a bit of a falling out, judging by the new clip above. One would assume that Spock might have broken things off, but Bones who come along seems to think it wasn’t Uhura to blame: “You know Spock, if an Earth girl says, ‘It’s me, not you.’ It’s definitely you.”

Yet while Kirk, Spock, Bones, Uhura and the rest are a lot like their characters from the Original Series and the follow up films, they’re also very different in the Kelvin Timeline. For that reason, Paramount has also released new character videos to bring viewers up to speed with who and where the characters are in Justin Lin’s Star Trek Beyond. Check out the new videos below featuring Kirk, Bones, Sulu and new alien ally Jaylah below:

Kirk is up to his usual antics in the video; Bones is as witty as ever; Sulu is the Enterprise’s expert flyboy; Jaylah is not everything she appears to be. Lin’s Star Trek film appears to be very different than others in the franchise that came before it, but at the very least it promises to be a fun ride. And on the edge of the 50 year anniversary, it’s a breath of fresh air. Hopefully, appealing to a newer, younger generation of viewers can pull in more fans, who will then wait in anticipation with us for the new Trek series coming early next year.

Star Trek Beyond hits U.S. theaters July 22, 2016.
