Wolverine 3 is Being Scored by Cliff Martinez

Director James Mangold’s Wolverine 3 appears to be chugging along at a steady pace, as evidenced by reports that 20th Century Fox has registered the film’s potential official title of Wolverine: Weapon X (or just Weapon X), and multiple photos having leaked from the set – showing Hugh Jackman on the streets of New Orleans, playing Logan/Wolverine for (supposedly) the final time. With an under-wraps storyline that may be drawing inspiration from such comic book stories as Old Man Logan and The Death of Wolverine, among others, the stage has been set for a thrilling X-Men feature event that is not to be missed.

Potentially serving as Jackman’s swan song to the character and the entire X-Men feature franchise, Wolverine 3 will inevitably change the game in terms of the narrative course that future films will take (especially considering the rumored inclusion of X-23 in Mangold’s new film). While those in the know describing the film as an R-rated spectacle with a “violent western” tone, the latest word on Wolverine 3 points to another addition to the cast and crew that will further shape the production thematically.

According to Film Music Reporter, Cliff Martinez (The Neon Demon) has been officially signed on to provide the original score for Wolverine 3. Based on Martinez’s extensive history as a go-to music composer within the filmmaking industry, it should come as no surprise that his inclusion in Mangold’s production should be welcomed with open arms – as his penchant for orchestrating moody and atmospheric soundscapes is impeccable, most notably with his recent string of work with Danish filmmaker Nicolas Winding Refn on The Neon DemonDrive and Only God Forgives.

If everything continues to fall into place behind the scenes, then Martinez will quickly make himself more than useful in the production of Wolverine 3, and provide a score against which the film’s actors will find room to perform and further develop their individual characters. On that note, here’s to hoping that Martinez doesn’t disappoint and his original soundtrack will prove more than satisfactory for general moviegoers come time of the film’s theatrical release next March.

Mangold certainly seems to be prepping for quite the X-Men feature with Wolverine 3, and Jackman is no doubt eager to deliver a stirring send off to the character that he’s brought to life for moviegoers the world over since the turn of the 21st century. And Martinez is an undeniable talent, which makes his inclusion in the forthcoming comic book movie a more than enticing added incentive for viewers to see the film in theaters next year.

Wolverine 3 opens in U.S. theaters on March 3rd, 2017, followed by unannounced X-Men films on October 6th, 2017 (possibly Gambit), March 2nd, 2018 (possibly Deadpool 2), and June 29th, 2018 (possibly New Mutants). X-Force is also in development.
